Glen Canyon Dam Operations

In March 2008, a high flow test will be implemented. Based on information from scientific monitoring and research activities and stakeholder discussions in the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program, Reclamation has proposed and will conduct a high flow experiment beginning on March 4, 2008 at 22:00 MST. The release characteristics of this experiment will be identical to the test conducted in November2004 with a peak release magnitude of 41,500 cfs and a duration of 60 hours. A gradual ramp up to this peak will begin on March 4, 2008 at 22:00 MST. On March 5, 2008 at approximately 10:00 MST, Glen Canyon Powerplant will be releasing approximately26,500 cfs and bypass releases will begin to ramp up. The peak release of 41,500 cfs is scheduled to begin on March 6, 2008 at approximately 4:00 MST and will be maintained for 60 hours to be followed with a gradual ramp down to normal operations by March 10,2008.

River Runner Drowned at Hance Rapid

March 17th, 2008

A non-commercial river runner flipped his raft in Hance Rapid on the afternoon of March 16, 2008, on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.
 
The boater was quickly retrieved from the water by other members of the group but was unresponsive. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was initiated immediately.
 
The NPS was unable to fly a helicopter rescue mission that afternoon as the canyon was socked in with fog and snow showers were reported at the South Rim Helibase.
 

Park tries to fill winter trips

Grand Canyon National Park officials have started a week long lottery for 66 river trips all in 2009. The lottery ends at noon Arizona time on Tuesday March 25, 2008.
 
Of the 66 trips the Park has in this lottery, 51 are either in January, February, November or December of 2009.
 
There are only three dates available for the popular months May through September of 2009, and one of these three dates is for a group size of 8 persons or less.
