Glen Canyon Dam Update

Releases from Glen Canyon Dam in August 2007 will average 13,100 cubic feet per second (cfs) with a total of 804,000 acre-feet scheduled to be released for the month. On Mondays through Fridays in August, daily release fluctuations due to load following will likely vary between a low of 9,000 cfs (during late evening and early morning off-peak hours) to a high of 17,000 cfs (during daylight and early evening on-peak hours). On Saturdays, release fluctuations will likely vary between a low of 9,000 cfs to a high of 16,000 cfs. On Sundays, release fluctuations will likely vary between a low of 9,000 cfs to a high of 15,000 cfs.
Releases are scheduled to be decreased in September. The current schedule shows 603,000 acre-feet of release in September 2007, which corresponds to an average flow of 10,100 cfs.

You may know of Harvey Butchart, the legendary Grand Canyon explorer who covered thousands of miles in the Canyon from the ‘40s to the ‘90s, but did you also know he used an air mattress to run parts of the river?
The new book, Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchart and the Exploration of Grand Canyon by Dr. Tom Myers (Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon) and Elias Butler chronicles the fascinating life of Harvey Butchart and is now offered in the River Runners for Wilderness store at Grand Obsession at the RRFW Store.
Grand Canyon Lottery Started Today

Without any prior notice to the public, Grand Canyon National Park officials began a lottery today for 9 self guided river trip launches. The lottery runs through noon, Wednesday August 22.
The first date available is September 8, 2007,and winners of the lottery for that date will have only two weeks to pull together all that is needed for a multi week river trip.
The dates available for this lottery are September 8 and 20, October 14, 27 and 31, November 3, 8, and 15, and December 22, all in 2007.
Grand Canyon Litigation Update

River Toilet Cleanout Now Available in Flagstaff

The Wildcat Hill Wastewater Treatment Facility in Flagstaff, Arizona is now accepting self guided river runners' solid waste from river toilets.
River Runners for Wilderness worked with the City of Flagstaff's Larry Lemke, Wastewater Treatment Manager, to arrange this service.
